Haha thank you! Well honestly the main concern is so far is staffing! The project has been probably mostly just me with help and support from ranmori doing 100% of the flightplans(OAG plus representative, there will be a lot of AI goodies in this package) and ranmori doing 100% of the paints. That and there is a lack in motivation in parking certain aircraft types as we both run P3Dv4 and many of the older aircraft AI models have not been converted or do not have permission to be publicly converted which will make them un-usable in the new sim(which is what this project is being made for) and will not show up in our personal sims. All the research and troubleshooting required for this project makes it very time consuming, especially when I use downtime at work as the main platform for my contributions. The other members of the group have other areas of interest so Japan has just been myself and ranmori, but I am hoping that the potential of the project attracts more painters and flightplanners. Flightplanning takes a lot of accuracy, and at times historical knowledge and use of resources to figure out. Places like Korea, Hong Kong/Macau, and Taiwan should go faster as there are less flights than Japan and far less traffic outside the OAG plus we learned a LOT about organization and work flow that will make the other projects much easier.

I'd rather see a donation go to one of these things that will really help our project be done much easier:

-The fleetbook suggested by noob21, or similarly a JP Fleetsbook(99-00 would have been printed in 1998) which will make determining how many aircraft we should have for the national carriers and 1998 reg numbers so much faster/easier than picking the info from various sites and a JP Fleets book printed in 1994 lol.
-Japan TransOcean Air flight schedule(or even photos of the pages) as several of the smaller cities served by RAC were omitted from the OAG and J-Air was omitted entirely and both are included.
-CARGO FLIGHTPLANS! We still have no resource for cargo flightplans, I have not even seen a Cargo OAG/ABC book on ebay for any era except the 70s once. So that means we are forced to request to modify flightplans from either the late 80s or early 2000s off avsim/flightsim or RAI...not very realistic as cargo routes can change as fast as pax routes. In all likelihood, Japan's cargo carriers will just be flying around on plans that could be a decade off. Air Freight was huge in Japan in 1998, and obviously it still is today with NCA and JALCargo in full swing with 747s.
-Any scenery design software that may make the process easier, this will incline us to do more airports lol.


As for the progress, there are several parts to this project as we want to very well represent flying in each part of the world in 1998, from GA to airline flying. The OAG flightplans are complete sans registration numbers and fine-tuning assigning mock maintenance ferries and training flights to Shimojishima(RORS) to planes that only fly a few segments per week and figuring out which international routes saw JAL 743s vs 741/742 and same with ANA 772 and 773s. The government plans consisting of the Japan Coast Guard and JCAB(which will preform flight check doing touch and goes as most commercial airports once per week for an hour to screw everything up like real life ) along with very limited JSDF flying(YS-11As, 747-400 and some biz jets) are just about finished up. The small/non-scheduled carriers is waiting on J-Air flightplans as they are not included in the OAG for whatever reason, but I will use 1996 plans by Eduardo(assuming we get his permission) as the worst case. General Aviation plans will simply be me using the GA flights generator and excluding all non-Japanese airports plus Japanese airports that would be unrealistic for GA ops like military bases and Tokyo Narita, so this will not be time consuming. Cargo has not been touched yet except for repaints. I have been in contact with a few of the authors who's plans I used to make my various 1995/96 representative cargo plans on this site and in all likelihood we will end up using those, for now anyway. Any editvoicepack files needed for correct callsigns will be included with the release.

We have already began scouting airports and requesting permission to modify nice FSX-scenery files with a backdated terminal for our project. This will be our choice where possible as the scenery will look a lot better than what we make! lol. The main differences between most Japanese airports in 1998 and today are simply the old terminal having been replaced or a new international terminal being added and runway extensions while some have not changed much at all. This means that in most cases, just a few custom objects with an exclude or two and trimming the taxiways along with the new airline assignments. Sounds easy, but we have very limited scenery experience so any help with that is also very welcome!

Here are 2 more sneak peaks at NRT, right now as some aircraft like the A310 for example do not have FSX AI models yet, I have subbed them with 747s which is why Singapore has 3(I think at least 1 is an A310 and 1 a 772) and Air China should most likely have an A343 instead of 2 747SPs together, but no FSPX paint yet).





And here is the RORS ramp at peak time, full of training flights. Most of these aircraft should be in the pattern, I need to figure out why they are not performing touch and go landings as I instructed with AI Flightplanner. They are supposed to arrive, spend little time on the ground then do 1-2 hours of touch and goes, land, then shortly after return to whatever maintenance base they departed from. However, they seem to just sit here. Any ideas are welcome! This airport is a very cool gem used extensively for flight training, and our project will even come with a schedule for the training flights which vary day to day for AI spotting or flying among the jets.

Flight planning is just about done, here are some goodies for you guys. For P3D users, not all these paints are out there. For FS9/FSX users, you can find the paints for most of these either in the google drive folder in my signature(those ones are by ranmori). Others are on avsim or not available yet.

First are updated non-scheduled Japanese airline plans. These plans include the same small carriers and charter operators as before, but we have added NAL and Air Do. NAL was Nagoya-based with Fokker 50s and Air Do was yet to operate commercially, but had an aircraft painted and doing training flights. The lone 767 splits its time between RJCC and RJTT and does several training flights per week to RORS.

And here are the Japanese government plans, the 2 JSDF 747s have been moved to this file set, and also included are the Japanese Coast Guard and JCAB which will add a decent number of YS-11As to the Japanese skies. The Coast Guard YS-11As do surveillance from bases and coastal towns simulated by flights between civilian airports and military bases that the aircraft operated from in that era. The biz jets are for VIP transport and visit Seoul-Gimpo and Kai Tak. JCAB is the Japanese equivalent of "Flight Check",the planes test/calibrate instrument approach systems and evaluate airports in the country. The fleet is based at RJTT and covers the majority of Japanese commercial airports with an hour or so of touch and go landings to simulate the calibration. At airports without an ILS, the planes arrive and sit on the ramp for several hours.

Update, OAG plans are in beta testing for not only Japan but Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, North Korea, South Korea, and the Philippines. This will include ALL flights for airlines based in these countries, including flights with stops in other nations. Scenery for Japan is well underway and will probably be released not long after the plans. I have also made a lot of progress on flights to the USA Pacific Northwest (Idaho/Washington/Oregon) which will come out in the next few months as well. The biggest issue right now(for P3Dv4 users anyway) is that many AI models are still incompatible or are not available to the public. We may have to do some work arounds, like the FSP DC-10-10 representing the -30s or leaving out the Bae-146, ect. Still figuring that out.

Just check back every so often for updates.

Sadly, the vast majority of older AI models do not work without conversion. One must search the web or ask around to find the conversions that have been done, and several authors have either rejected the release of updated models for P3Dv4 or are unresponsive to the community, so they are hard to find. the majority, but not all, of AIA models for example are converted and an easy download on Avsim. But when we get into AIG models and some others, it requires digging and finding a model in some forum or other obscure source. Still, the majority seem unconverted publicly, such as the CRJ and HS-748. Almost no Russian planes seem to have been converted. Some, like HJG, just work in P3d

A little trick I was taught is that the ORBX Freeware AI packages have converted all models used, like the FMAI Bae-146, into 64-bit format and you may use them in your sim for whatever you need.

Give it a few years, I'm sure we will see more. Seeing an airport full of retro AI in P3Dv4 is simply amazing, however, with all the lighting and shading differences.

FSP is the only option for the DC-10 I know of that can be used, better than nothing.

After some discussion, it became clear that it is easier for the painters to do entire fleets in order rather than paint an aircraft here or there from each fleet as required. As such, we have decided to complete each project country by first creating(and rleasing to you!) entire completed airlines. So every airline required for Japan, from MIAT Mongolian to Iberia, will be completed prior to release. We will upload textures and flightplans either in batches(like Hong Kong/Macau) or individually in the meantime, and the final "JAPAN" project will have all of those complete airlines as well as all the charter/cargo/military included traffic and ADEX/scenery to backdate the country. This is good news for you guys as files will be released much more frequently and can be used to adapt to other eras.

The other good news is that while textures for FS9 will not be supported, I have decided to release "flightplans only" on Avsim so that you FS2004 folders can just plug in your own paints and enjoy the sim. Of course, those of you on RAI are already getting these in the flightplans thread, but we are doing this via Avsim and Flightsim for the community to show that we appreciate all the AI contributions from FS2004 users that continue to be created to this day. I hope that makes members here feel a little more included and shows that regardless of what sim you are running, we are all on the same team.

The first release is up on Avsim now, airlines will have standard versions, bonus versions(with aircraft from the 96-99 era but not active in 1998), and lite versions with minimal variations.

Airlines of Hong Kong/Macau 1998 is up on Avsim now with repaints as:
"airlines_of_hong_kong_1998.zip"

Flightplans only for all included airlines as:
"airlines_of_hong_kong_flightplans_1998.zip"

We have completed the VARIG fleet for 1998, and flightplans are underway. VASP is also being painted with Transbrasil in progress. As we continue to complete the remaining airlines for Japan(that weren't based there), the next releases will be something like this:

AIG has conversion steps posted on their website, with them you can convert any model, just takes time but it isn't very difficult, just time consuming.

Do not be discouraged by the "P3D only" texture release. There are ways to convert those textures for use on your FS9 FAIB models.
Use the included Targa files to resize them as necessary (4096/2048 to 1024) and save them as the correct file name.
This will ensure the best quality conversion (using DXTBmp, for example). When saving the converted file, make sure to insert the correct alpha file so to get the correct "bumps-and-bruises" to show up on the models.

This is the 1998 project not the 1980s project. 1980s paints are an irrelevant bonus for our 1998 project. We also have no plans to include any models.

I'm sorry, but our project will not include anything that you are suggesting and is not up for negotiation and no requests will be taken. I'd also recommend that you please do not harass Brian about his 1983 project either, just let him paint what he feels like. It is a hobby, so take it or leave it, I'm afraid. Feel free to paint youself or finish your 80s project, but we will not be painting anything outside of the 1996-99 timeframe.
