I'm not dead, just taking a long break..... I have been racking up some hours on FS11, and developing my usual non-filtered opinion.... Things I like about FS11: Graphics, even at a medium-high setting, are phenomenal and very frame-rate friendly. I haven't been to an airport yet that I feel I have to buy add-on scenery for, as even the default airport setups will blow you away, and everything is well-loaded with AI traffic parking. The mesh, landclass, vector data, and photo-scenery are top-notch, which is probably an understatement; again no need (for me at least) to invest a ton of money for airport/scenery add-ons. And, thanks to PMDG and Aerosoft finally beating it into my head, I had the 787 and A320Neo in the air in very short order. FSTramp already has their program integrated into FS11. Things I don't like: Forced install to the primary (C) drive. My C drive is only a 512GB SSD, so not a lot of space left over. No helicopters yet (what were they thinking?). IMHO this was an Xbox console development that MS begrudgingly allowed to be converted into a PC game. The game is totally wired for multi-player and social media sharing, if that's your thing, but it gets in the way of it being what it should be all along, a flight simulator. I really don't care about unlocking achievements (participation trophies) and sharing it with the world. No default joystick support, I have to program my X55 manually (not for the faint at heart). And, I still can't find the main install folder. Very mod-unfriendly for now, I'm pretty sure Flight1 or somebody else will come out with an AI traffic package, and I will probably go for that instead of trying to sort this file system out. All in all a good visual sim when you get used to it, but the way it is structured, it might be the end of casual hobby tinkering with FS for now. At least P3D can trace its roots all the way back to FS2000, in terms of 3rd-party tinker ability and basic file structure. Just my opinion, of course. I am also flying some P3Dv4, and was REALLY happy that a good (payware) Sharjah scenery was released last week, so I have scenery and international airports for the entire Arabian peninsula now. I am tinkering with some new painting, screenshots next week some time. :{)

Sounds great, glad you’re liking the new flight sim, as I haven’t gotten a chance to do so myself. I do hope they eventually make it a little more tinker friendly, and I believe they will, but the game is still pretty early and kind of half baked. From what I’ve heard, they expected to release it later in the year, but corona(and possibly alpha testers that didn’t give enough usable input) made them decide to move the release date closer. I certainly hope they make it more accepting of a climate for us tinkerers, and I have made some posts on the forum to get some thoughts in their head.

Interesting perspective on FS2020, I'd figured as much. My prediction was that at first, we'd be blown away as a community and people would love the visuals. But after time, I figure people will miss their aircraft, VATSIM, realistic AI aircraft(payware add-ons with PAI-type models and outdated plans\textures won't do it for most of us here and the AIG crowd!), and the current lack of customization would bring the long-time simmers back to P3Dv5 while the people who could care less about everything I listed and just want to fly around a pretty world with their buddies arcade-ish style will never return to P3D and X-plane. The willingness of Microsoft to work with 3rd party vendors, however, has me hopeful that both 64-bit add-ons from P3D as well as our AI projects will work with it one day, but until then, I'll hold off as I don't have the space to have both on my SSD Drive C, which is my smallest drive due to the cost of SSDs! Here is hoping that 2 years from now, FS2020 is useful to all of us here, certainly has the potential, though I am admittedly very wary of any Flight Sim that will work on Xbox LOL.
Anyway, if you guys check the 1998 thread, Tower Air is done, specifically divided up making the install of Mikey's many paints easy, while ATA and TWA are right around the corner with SAS and Braathens being finished but several weeks out. Not too many of his late 90s paints don't have plans by now! Just the major US carriers, of which Delta and Northwest are in progress and Air Canada and Canadian are close to completion. Eduardo Villanueva was kind enough to mail me several schedules from 1996-2002, including Southwest and US Airways 1998, so I hope to have both of those completed by the end of the year and at least the East Coast USA will look rather full, along with MDW, PIT, STL and several other major airports.

So.... more hours on FS11 and P3Dv4.... it's easy to get lost in just flying..... Anyways, I was updating some of my classic traffic, and I found I missed one (of several here and there), SIA 744s. I have the basic paint done, and because of several email requests I am going to take a whack at the ill-fated Tropical Megatop livery. There were two of them, and the morning after the first one crashed, they quietly took the other one out of service and repainted it back into the standard livery. The moral of the story is, don't try to take off on an out-of-service runway under construction. Also, I am doing some expanded work for the TACA Group, with a bunch of BAC-111/737/767 paints coming down the pipe. So, I am taking care of both sides of the Pacific this paint run. Screenshots next week. Oh, yeah, another gripe on the list for FS11, when it updates (service pack), it resets the sim back to factory settings, so the fledgling group of repaints I added in disappeared. :{)

Wow if they painted it the morning after, I must have seen the other Megatop on it's last journey! On the day that the crash happened, SQ1\2 SIN-HKG-SFO and back was operated by the other Megatop, I remember having watched it arrive at dusk in SFO minutes before I got the news. I suppose when it got to SIN the next morning, that was that. Never had any idea, good info, Mikey! For the TACA group, I did the NICA paint as it appeared in 1998, but the livery I painted was 1998 only, it was different in both 1997 and 1999, having worn the old colors in 97 and the TACA livery with NICA titles in 1999. Looking forward to the rest, all the Grupo TACA plans are done for 98 with all the livery variations accounted for in the plans!

It’s dumb but that’s how asobo decided to knacker it.

I have read different stories about the second aircraft, varying from the next day to several days afterwards to be taken out of service, but all sources concur that it was 'immediately' after the crash. :{)

Asobo still has a lot of things to fix, including problems they just brought upon themselves.

Dear Mike,
Is there any chance to update the textures of 'aia_727-100_tag.zip' at avsim.com?
When I open it with DXTBmp it shows CF Airfreight colours instead of the previewed Orion Air Colours.
Thank you Mike
Alex

Well, that sucks.... I take 2-3 months off, and come back with new painting just in time for the holidays, and I can't upload screenshots (forum limit exceeded....). That's okay, I'll just stroke your imagination a little bit.
I took some time with some other non-FS hobbies (using Photoshop), and I learned a bit of new technique. What I can't preview and tease with are the 14 SIA 744s ready to go, but I will upload them this weekend. There are lots of variants (as usual), satcomms, Star Alliance, both of the Tropical aircraft, some random missing engine logos, and an Ansett hybrid in the mix. I will be doing the SIA A343s next, since I already have the 50th Anniversary ribbon done on the 744.
My new best friend is the Photoshop Pen Tool.... enough said.
More to follow.

It is tricky to use it but once you get the hang of it becomes your best friend (though with the downside that some logos or liveries become tedious to do). I've been away from painting AI textures for a while and, during this time, I see that some of you have done a whole lot of new awesome textures. I am glad to say that I working on some new textures which I will preview soon. As usual, my main focus is the 90s and what you will see is some textures that haven't been done before and updates of textures I did before but for newer models. In fact, it was you mikeblaze who inspired me to come back to painting when I saw your Eurofly and Alitalia Hybrids. That made me starve for UI versions of them which I did early this year and can be found at HJG and now I'm working on AI stuff. As for the screenshots, I use imgur as mentioned by chrisP and I don't think there is a limit of links to be posted on a post. Cheers!! Eddie
