I whipped up a quick excel file to aid my AI periods and flightplanning, figured I would share it with you guys as a Google Doc that I can edit along with anyone else who wishes to update it. Other than a few exceptions, I was mostly looking for airports that opened/closed from the 80s onward, either entirely or to commercial/international traffic. I also included a few airports that ceased to exist entirely(Lanarca, Gaza, and Meigs Field in Chicago), though I suppose we can add Donetsk to that. This should aid in selecting scenery, flightplanning and modifying plans to a certain era. I will keep it restricted to airports with commercial service(Great Lakes and some others flew to Meigs). Post contributions here and I will update. A few of the airports had their codes transferred to the new airports, and unlike VHHX, XDEN, ect, I have yet to see an alternate code for them in FS flightplans. Cool! Will it be Stapleton as it was at its closure in 1995 with all concourses complete, or an 80s version? I had started one too, but I have a LOT of reading up on ADEX and scenery design to do so I guess I'll just abandon this and work on Austin-Muller(KATT) instead which will be a much easier project.  Did not know about Munich, interesting that the old Tower still stands(just like Stapleton and Austin-Muller), I'll keep that in mind should I ever visit. Templehoff, of course, is huge on my list of things to see in Germany. If only we honored our old airports like that here in the USA. KSRF, Hamilton Air Force Base just North of the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge, was flooded with its shut down and NAS Alemeda right next to downtown San Francisco mostly dug up and turned into a set for the TV show "Mythbusters". Airport parks are a great idea, it is all open space after all. EVRR (earlier UMRA)Riga-Rumbula. Closed in 1974. Did this have airline service? Can't find any info on it or what it was replaced by. |

Cool! Will it be Stapleton as it was at its closure in 1995 with all concourses complete, or an 80s version? I've got charts for the late 80s, with the commuter runways in operation and the only good photos of the terminal that I could find are from the 90s, so it will be a bit of a mix. Google Earth also only goes as far back as 1993. The east-west commuter runway on the taxiway was removed in the 1990s, I think, while the separate north-south runway stuck till the end. The terminal complex will have the remodeled concourse B and E. It's all looking quite generic as I only want to use a single texture sheet. Tower and hangar 61 are "borrowed" from the Sketchup warehouse. Not sure if the old terminal was still standing in the 1980s or 90s, but I faintly remember that I left the model (from the Calclassic scenery) in. Regarding the Continental and United (or Frontier?) maintenance hangars on the north apron, these might be generic. There was also an old maintenance hanger there, which I could carry over from the CC scenery as well. It's been a while since I've worked on it (texturing models, ugh!). You need SketchUp or Blender for the models, but if you manage to find semi-fitting generic default models for the terminals, it's fine by me. Just get some ADEX skills as the runway and taxiway layouts are the most important part. I'd really appreciate some help with backdating airports. It's a lot of annoying detail work, espeically with the taxi signs and terminals. You can check my collection of backdated ADEX files for reference. Since good source data is few and far between and some actions (terminals!) would require an unwarranted amount of effort, these projects involve a lot of artistic liberty. For a start, you can try to find a preferably smaller airport (which I did not cover yet) that only received taxiway and gate changes and practice basic airport editing. I think some airports in California like BUR or SBA might be good candidates. Or Montréal Dorval. Or LAS or MIA (as these are pretty much locked in). Tempelhof is under constant threat by the city administration and only kept public and intact by citizen demand. The terminal is basically untouchable, but the rest is prime land for high price apartments and all that urban development BS. Give it 20 years and the area will look just like any other disused airport. Tegel is set to close in 2017 and the excavators are already waiting. Hopefully, the new airport will open in 2050 or 2060. |

Thanks so much you guys! I updated the list, eventually I will add a column for available sceneries with the date depicted and links/filenames. I hope this aids in backdating your sims/creating flightplans. @bjoern, I have been tooling with AFCAD since FS2002 came out and the only way to get airlines to park at the proper airport was to create a bunch of other airports with only those gates active!(1SFO,2SFO,ect). ADEX is a handy tool, but I'm still new with it as well as modelconverterX and P3D itself. Once I settle in, I'm sure it'll be a lot easier to contribute. Starting small I have re-done KTVL and KMRY in circa 1995 for the Orbx Sceneries, though I know most of you run FS2004/FSX. Using your 80s SFO as a starter(which was great for most taxiways/runways at the time), I have been tweaking it for realism adding/editing several ramp areas(butler aviation FBO, North Cargo, Cargo area that is where Signature is today, UAX gates, ect) making a 1995 SFO. I just need to figure out how to exclude the intl terminals and some other structures to clear house and then I will start making and planting objects. I am modifying some FS2004 freeware SJC and OAK scenery as well, but having lots of trouble with modelconverterX and can't get the objects to show even though it would appear I am exporting them in the p3d/FSX format. Gotta figure that stuff out, but I will share what I have...when I have it. Once I get it all down, I'll start helping out with backdating more airports. Right now however, just SFO is a lot of work since I don't know what I'm doing! |
