Hi Kris and all.

I need a torch now to see where I am. The new look is rather dark on my old laptop!

OK.

I have been taking a rest from FS for the past couple of weeks due to burn out. Lots of work done to models and lots of FP,s that are ready for compiling and fixing.

I have also started to buy new bits to make an up to date(ish) computer. This old AMD Athlon FX60 is not up to modern games!!

I have bought the first few bits with the cash I have.
The processor and the ram!!
This time its an Intel QX6800 extreme processor so UT3 should fly!!

Unfortunately, my old PC has got wise to me buying these parts so has decided that it will send me into withdrawal by dieing on me.

Last May, The old Enermax 650W PSU died and now its replacement BFG 800W PSU has died in the same way.
Turn them on and they blow the mains fuses!!

I have been leaving them turned on so you just press the soft power on the PC to turn them on.
Trawling though forums this is deemed a no no as it does seem to cause premature failure of the PSU and they recommend to turn the main off when the PC is not in use. To late for me.

I have contacted BFG as the PSU is not a year old and it also has a lifetime warranty.

I now await an answer from them on where I go now.

I don't have enough cash to get the rest of the PC parts just yet so I will just have to hang tight until BFG hopefully send me a replacement.
I need to get this PC working to sell to get some cash for the new one.

Not what I wanted for my birthday tomorrow!!

This laptop had a new HD a while back so I have nothing FS related on it so back to watching movies for me!!

Hi Guys.

Got an RMA number from BFG so the PSU will be sent back soon.

I need to get a better box and they also what it sent by DHL or FedEx, so it won't be cheap.

Hopefully I'll have the replacement some time next week!!

Hi All.

PC is up and running again with the replacement PSU.

I'm busy backing up files etc as I hope to start putting my new PC into this case tomorrow. It all depends if the WD Raptor that I will be using for my boot drive arrives at the promised time.

The only thing I have not got yet for the new PC are the twin GeForce 8800GT graphics cards as I am completely out of money now, so they will come later.

To partner the Raptor I have two WD 1TB drives sitting on my desk. It will take me some time to get everything copied over from my old drives.
I just hope the Raptor arrives as I'm itching to get started on the rebuild!!

I wonder how long it will take to format 2 TBs! 30 Min's?? I'll soon find out (I hope).

Hopefully in a couple of weeks I should be back to normal(ish) and some of these flight plans that are sitting on my HD can see the light!!

We have 1.9 petabytes of clustered storage on one rack, that took a day to format everything. But, then, A petabyte is 1000TB, so it's quite a difference

I somehow don't think I could afford that much HD space ;D

Raptor arrived OK, so just about to shut down to do the change over.

Hopefully it will all go smoothly.

Oh, it will just be a few short years before we can all afford it - and the way M$ is going with ever-larger and memory-sucking OS's, we'll need that space. M$ "recommends" (which means double the number to get an efficient install a paging file of 3GB, but foe some reason when I let Vista managing it, it only allocates 2.2GB - so if you ever see consistent out-of-memory errors in programs after Vista has been running for a while, check the paging file and set if manually if need be - I did that and now the problems cleared up.

The company I work with can afford all that space, but it's a matter of being able to afford it and getting the non-techie execs at corporate to spend the money. The mindset of "If it works, why change it?" is hard to overcome - yes, systems will work much longer than their useful life, but they are obsolete and put you at a disadvantage. Even personally, I have an old Celeron 400 machine that I've had for nine years - it runs just fine, but I can't put FS9 on it. The board is limited to 256MB RAM and it has slower IDE drive connections. It won't really even run XP (though in theory, it should), 2000 is the last stable generation that runs. So, it's no longer my main computer, it's running FreeBSD as a firewall server. I could put Windows back on it and it would run fine for a lot of things - like web-browsing on sites without a lot of embedded content, but is it really up to the task for 2008? Hardly. Sorry, that's just a matter that gets to me - the stubborness of some who thinks you should only replace systems when they quit. That's not as much of a concern with home systems as it is enterprise.
