It never worked for me either. Only FSX native planes will work from past sims, P3D (any version) and FS9 models will not work. What you need to do is observe how FSLTL structures their AI aircraft folders (the primary one, not the liveries). You need to take the traditional aircraft.cfg and break it down but "cutting" each bit of data (like "[exits]") to the proper text file. So instead of 1 aircraft.cfg, you end up with a bunch of .cfg files each having some of the stuff on the aircraft.cfg. The actual aircraft.cfg in MSFS pretty much is just for the livery entries and a few other things. Eliminate the .air file and the I always do CTRL+R to replace "sim=AIA_727-200" (or whatever the hell it is for that plane) with "IsAirTraffic=1". This is required for planes to show up as AI, and the other line is obsolete, so might as well. Copy the top data from another AI airplanes aircraft.cfg that is MSFS native (like AIG or FSLTL) and edit as needed at the top of the [fltsim.0] entry. I usually add "isuserselectable=0"(so they don't show up in the aircraft menu) and then decide if it uses jetways, a pushback, ect as needed. You'll see what I mean. Probably. Not the easiest thing in the world, but not all that difficult.
As for getting the planes to show up (outside of using model matching files [.vmr] and getting them in FSLTL and VATSIM), good luck. Lol. At least until the AIG Traffic Controller update.
