Cal Sierra Airlines was a small US charter and scheduled carrier based in San Diego (SAN) offering services to the resort city of South Lake Tahoe (TVL). In the mid-1970s, the city of South Lake Tahoe instituted a ban on pure-jet traffic at TVL, under pressure from citizens with noise and environmental concerns. At the time, air service was a popular way to get to TVL, and both of California's large intra-state carriers, Air California and Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA), served several cities from TVL at the time of the ban, which came as both carriers were planning on switching to 737s and retiring their aging Lockheed Electras. Both carriers elected to keep the Electras in their fleets solely to service TVL, though SAN-based PSA got tired of waiting and pulled out of TVL in 1979. Seeing an opportunity to replace the large turboprop service between SAN and TVL, Cal Sierra Airlines was founded shortly after. With the slogan "Your Airlift to The Chairlift" and young flight attendants wearing fuzzy winter fur boots and cowboy hats, the carrier began flights between SAN and TVL with a lone Convair 340 in December of 1980. Just as the founders had envisioned, the new airline was immediately popular with high load factors for the 1980\81 winter ski season. Realizing that TVL was highly seasonal with most traffic demand occurring in the summer and winter months, Cal Sierra Airlines looked to expand to cities in Mexico and the Southwest United States in 1981 to make it through the slow season. However, at this time the "PATCO Strike", where the air traffic controllers union in the US at the time called a total strike which lead to presidential intervention by Ronald Regan who fired the entire workforce, had thrown US airline operations and the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) into a frenzy. Due to their workload, the CAB suspended the authorization of all new international routes and air carrier start-ups. Having lost money preparing to launch international flights and now having to survive the low-demand traffic season for TVL with the one route to TVL and some charters where possible, the airline ran out of money just before the height of the 1981 ski season, ending operations in December of 1981 about 1 year after operations began.

These flightplans are based on the July 1981 schedule. I added some charters connecting cities with TVL that were popular with such charters at the time. I have done the repaint on the DWAI CV-580, though the real aircraft was a CV-340. Now that we have the Christian Page CV-340, hopefully, someone cares to make this one properly.

Sterling One was a very short-lived US start-up airline based in Long Beach (LGB). Though once a popular destination for travel in the LA basin offering about as many flights as Burbank (BUR) and Ontario (ONT), traffic began to dwindle at LGB after the early 1990s with Alaska closing the hub it inherited from LGB-based Jet America, at which point most other major airlines lost interest in competing there. With no links to destinations in the Eastern United States remaining, a "paper airline" with no actual aircraft was formed in 1995 called "Sterling One", offering a direct public charter link between LGB and Chicago (ORD), a route which a few carriers had operated for years in the past. Ft. Lauderdale (FLL)-based US charter airline AV Atlantic was selected to operate the flights, and 727-200 N293AS was painted in the full livery of Sterling One. Flights began within weeks of the airline being formed, but the venture did not make money and the airline failed within the first few months of service, with the 727 being returned to AV Atlantic where it went on to become the campaign plane for presidential candidate Bob Dole in 1996. AV Atlantic failed in 1996, and the aircraft went to Champion Air, who failed in 2008. Years later in April of 2012, the aircraft was brought out of retirement for an experiment that involved modifying the 727 to be flown by remote control so it could be crashed in an effort to better understand bodily injuries across an aircraft during a more probable crash sequence.

Sky Trek International was a US charter carrier, specializing in sports and group charters, based in Ewing Township, New Jersey, but operationally based in Ft. Lauderdale (FLL). In 1997, they had 4 727-200s flying all across the US, both in VIP and public charter roles. The carrier became Discovery Airlines in October of 1999 and introduced a bold white and navy livery, but failed shortly afterward in 2000.

I have made 1998 plans also for this carrier, but these original plans are different both fleet-wise and with some of the destinations, for use as 1996\7 traffic. These flights were all public charter, use "atc_parking_types=GATE".

Champion Air for most of its life was a Minneapolis (MSP)-based scheduled and charter airline, which also operated various group charters. However, when the carrier started life with a very different business model. The airline was formed in 1995 when Los Angeles (LAX)-based MGM Air, a luxury airline that offered first-class charters and scheduled services, mostly on transcontinental flights (especially to New York JFK), was sold by its MGM parent company to Front Page Tours, who was an MSP-based small charter operator flying a 727 on behalf of the Minnesota Timberwolves professional basketball team at the time. Front Page Tours operated more as a broker between sports teams and charter carriers than it did an airline itself, and it immediately re-tasked the Champion Air fleet to this task. While 2 all-VIP DC-8-63s and several 727-100 and 727-200s were kept, the DHC-6s, used for a shuttle service between LAX and Orange County (SNA), and MGM Grand Air's 757s were not retained. One 727-100 was assigned to the Colorado Avalanche professional hockey team, flying the team in and out of their Denver Stapleton (DEN) base, and carrying their logo on the tail. All other aircraft either wore MGM\Express One-hybrid colors or the 1st generation Champion Air livery which featured gold stripes and gold tail lettering. The DC-8s mostly did sports charters within the US but ended up as far from home as Europe and Africa. The rest of the fleet did various charters for college and professional sports teams. In the late 1990s, Northwest Airlines purchased a majority share in the carrier and made it a leisure and charter subsidiary based in MSP, along with a scheduled carrier by the 2000s. Champion failed in May of 2008 due to a sharp increase in gas prices, still flying only the 727-200 at that time when as the last scheduled US passenger airline to do so.

These plans are very different than my 1998 Champion Air plans as the carrier was not MSP-based and did not normally fly leisure charters, so these plans representing the first few years of the carrier's life are more suitable to the mid-90s. Flightplans based on information and photo evidence found online along with the schedules of sports teams that were known customers of Champion Air. As was common with sports charters, there are many ferry flights. In real life, they would usually sit at a destination for 1-3 days waiting for a customer, but for the sake of them appearing in more cities, I have them wait 24 hours or less usually.

Use "atc_parking_codes=VIP" and "atc_parking_types=RAMP" for these plans.

Trans American Charter was a US charter carrier based at Chicago's Midway Airport (MDW). The carrier started life in 1987 as an air taxi charter company with small twin-engined props such as the Cessna Conquest, Piper Chieftain, and Beech King Air flying around the Great Lakes region and Eastern Canada. In 1992, the carrier received the authority to operate DC-9s on domestic public and sports charters, and DC-9-30 N947ML was purchased from the assets of recently failed MDW-based Midway Airlines with charters beginning by December. Initial customers for the carrier were the Miami Heat basketball team and the Flordia Marlins baseball team, both based out of the Miami Airport (MIA). In 1993, the carrier gained approval for international charters, which it used to operate flight to Canada. A BAe-146-200 was acquired in September of 1994, followed soon by 2 others. Initially, the type was used on public and group charters along with a semi-scheduled public service between MDW and Toronto (YYZ). At the end of the carrier's life, a series of charters were started to Aspen (ASE), which was only suitable for a small handful of commercial jets, for the winter 1994\1995 ski season. However, the airline operation failed in February 1995, and the company sold the BAe-146 and DC-9 fleet while it continues to operate to this day as with on-demand charters using general aviation aircraft from MDW and other airports.

Flightplans are representative based on the schedules of teams known to be used for charters and online and photo evidence. The sports charters have long ground times like real life. For the DC-9-30 and the VIP charter BAe-146, use "atc_parking_codes=VIP; atc_parking_types=RAMP". For the public charter BAe-146s, use "atc_parking_types=GATE".

\\Alpha Air 1989

Alpha Air was a Californian commuter airline based in Los Angeles (LAX). The carrier started life with a Cessna 402 offering service between Van Nuys (VNY), near Burbank (BUR), and the underserved mountain resort cities of Mammoth Lakes (MMH) and Bishop (BIH), where this was the first scheduled air service ever to that airport. Service expanded to also include the small general aviation airfield at Big Bear Lake, which also had no airline service, but these flights only lasted a few years. The carrier relocated to LAX in 1985 and expanded East to Arizona followed by North to San Jose (SJC) and South to Inyokern (IYK) in 1987. Soon after in 1988, after failing to obtain the operating certificate of failed airline Royal West which had BAe-146s and a 727, it decided to add larger 19-seat Beech 1900Cs to better compete with the commuter carriers operating for major airlines. Services were launched to the Grand Canyon (GCN) and expanded to Oakland (OAK) via SJC. Similarly sized rival carriers AirLA and Statewest Airlines competed with Alpha Air on some of its routes, but elected not to enter the ski leisure market in the mountain cities where Alpha Air focused its services. A single flight was started on the San Deigo (SAN) to LAX busy commuter corridor, but Alpha Air didn't make a serious attempt to compete beyond that. According to the 1989 OAG, a Convair was briefly used on routing to MMH and BIH via Burbank (BUR), with a B1900C route starting in SAN operating at the same times on some of the legs, perhaps for better staff utilization to minimize their shift times. However, no further evidence of a Convair operating on behalf of Alpha Air was discovered. The airline operated a DHC-6 Twin Otter in 1991 for luxury carrier MGM Grand Air for 1 year on a shuttle service between LAX and Orange County (SNA), after which time MGM Grand Air abanonded the service. Alpha Air became a TWA Express carrier in 1992, and operated under that banner until Alpha Air's failure in 1995, with most aircraft getting painted in the TWA livery, though one would ultimately retain Alpha Air's own colors. Briefly, a route was operated connecting LAX with Catalina Island (AVX), but this route appears to have not lasted more than 1 year, and was the last regularly scheduled passenger airline service to AVX. In its final years, the airline briefly expanded to San Francisco (SFO) and South Lake Tahoe (TVL) on behalf of TWA, operating an LAX-MMH-TVL-SFO route. TWA did not renew the contract in 1995 for a full 3rd year of service, and with all traffic now dependant on TWA, Alpha Air closed operations after 11 years of air service from the Los Angeles area, operating just 3 B1900Cs at the time.

I have also done 1995 flightplans for this carrier as a TWA Express operator, which are quite different than these plans. Since I was unable to find out any information at all about the Convair, for now all flights are B1900Cs.

3 Convair operators come to mind: Air Resorts, Renown Aviation, and/or Sierra Pacific. Renown had some charter customers out in CA right around this timeframe, so using them wouldn’t be out of the question. Sierra West & Air Resorts also had a similar following. If we only knew the type of Convair (440 vs 580), that’d help narrow it down.

According to JP Airline Fleets 90/91:
Air Resorts had 4x CV340, 9x CV440, 4x CV580, some of the 340s and 440s and 1x 580 were parked in Carlsbad. 2x 580 were operated for Trump Castle.
Renown Av. had 3x CV440, 1x CV240 (T-29B) and 1x CV580. All in service.
Sierra Pacific had 8x CV580, one of them damaged in 1989. There was a Cessna T210N Turbo Centurion II, too. A nice addition for the HTAI model.

Only listed as "CVR", check out how it merges with a B1900 flight and the 2 just hop around on the same schedule but then end the day in different locations. Rather odd, but TACA and Icelandair do the same thing (or did pre-COVID) in modern times, cuts down on staff as they're only required for the amount of time one flight would take...but confuses the HELL out of pax, let me tell you LOL:

So I guess between 2140 and 1745 each day, the Convair collected dust and ramp fees at LAX? LOL! If it was a rapid change\combi variant, would make sense to have it fly contract flights with pax during its downtime at LAX between night cargo runs.

Thank you for that. I have hard copies of 1991/92, 95/96, and 97/98 (plus digital for that one) as well, doing this 89/90 stuff, a 90/91 JP Fleets book would come in handy.

Do you show any Pipers for Air LA by chance? Listing some flights as "PAG" but I only show Twin Cessnas operated...

Air Sedona was a small air taxi company based in Sedona, Arizona (SDX\KSEZ), an airport built on a rocky plateau fairly near Phoenix (PHX). The company was wholly owned by the Sedona Air FBO and came into existence in 1981 when FBO-owner Jack Seeley realized that most of the on-demand charters provided by the FBO with their fleet of small general aviation props were headed to PHX. Jack decided to apply to create a scheduled air carrier permitted to use the passenger terminal at PHX to allow for seamless interline connections for pax traveling on and off of other carriers. Initially, 3 roundtrips per day were offered in a Cessna 207 all seven days of the week. By 1983, the airline averaged roughly 300 passengers per month most of the year in its 4 and 6-seat Cessnas, and that number jumped to about 600 passengers per month in the summertime. In 1984, a Cessna 207 was approaching SDX on a flight from PHX when it lost engine power near the airfield. The pilot made an off-airport landing, at which point the aircraft mysteriously burst into flames and eventually burned itself to a crisp after the occupants (the pilot and 1 passenger) were all safely gathered some distance away. The NTSB only was able to determine that a fuel line was blocked with dirt, and it remained a mystery how after no signs of the fire the Cessna suddenly was burning after an intact landing. Despite this, the airline carrier on for another several years until 1993, when the owner grew tired of increased competition both from an America West bus service, which used flight numbers and was able to complete the trip airport to airport in the same time as the flight due to busy PHX air traffic, and increased commuter flights from Scenic Airlines, SkyWest, and Mesa. The assets of the scheduled air carrier were sold to Scenic Airlines, who put larger Piper Navajos on the service until 1995 when Scenic Airlines abandoned the route. The FBO continued using the carrier's former codes and callsign on private charters which continue to this day.

Other than the NTSB report which noted a Cessna 207 as the specific type of aircraft being used on this service, I found no other information as far as tail numbers or aircraft types beyond "4 and 6 seat Cessnas". Most information was found in the history section of the FBO's website. For now, I have assigned the route to a Cessna 207 using the tail number of the aircraft in the 1984 accident. Given the challenges and scenery of operating into SDX, this would be a fun flight to recreate from the airline terminal in PHX in a small Cessna. I suppose if you have the HTAI Cessna 207s (for P3Dv4\5 users, ORBX converted some Cessna models in their GA packages), use a generic livery with the proper codes and callsign along with "atc_parking_types=GATE" as the aircraft parked by the United gates with the other commuters.

I've spent free time the last 2 weeks installing as much as I can for the 80s, especially utilizing the worldwide OAG files aleck created. Each one was a massive project, so I'd like to thank him again for making those. I have dozens and dozens of airlines from these OAG files individually packaged and updated to use the correct airports and with liveries as realistic as I could figure out, and I've got several hybrids from the 80s I'll release soon that are mostly edits of paints by other members here but needed for the 1986-1988 "merger mania" carriers. I have also patched together some airlines that were perhaps missing the DC-10-30 in the 1986 file but had a 1987 plan or something, so I have also tried to represent the fleet as accurately as possible with flightplans that closest match. For Continental 1988, for example, ex-PeoplExpress 747s switched with DC-10s that summer on many Pacific routes and began flying routes as far off as AKL briefly in the PeoplExpress hybrid colors, so I made a saw with a DC-10-30 and a 747 to represent this, and moved 747s missing from 1988 but included in 1991 over, for example. Continental, Braniff, Northwest, etc are examples of carriers that had huge amounts of livery variations that are included in the late 80s OAG projects, and I will soon be done with the West Coast networks of USAir and American when both of them had many hybrid ex-PSA\AirCal jets, as well as Piedmont hybrid 737s doing tons of USAir intra-California flying (which was mostly 737-300s and not ex-PSA MD-80s oddly enough which had mostly moved back East by 1989). It'll be a cool era to represent, and I have late 80s backdates for several airports on the West Coast and elsewhere (HNL, MSP, MDW, ORD, etc), as well as my attempts to make several decades of the old Austin Mueller Airport (ATT) converting FS9 objects\textures and expanding on the ever-evolving layout to take the 1972 freeware scenery and represent the airport through it's 1999 closure with several versions. So something to look forward to, as you can explore many complete US airports in the midst of all the hybrid colors.I have done several needed hybrids as well, and will attempt to complete the 1988 Northwest Airlink fleet on modern models, with the Fokker 27-200\500\600 all being operated in 4 livery variations. I have also included the Convair 580s that were not in the 1988 Northwest Airlines plans, taking them from Republic's final schedule. In 1988, they were all moved to MKE and opened up a regional hub there that only lasted about 1 year past the 1987 Northwest\Republic Merger. All aircraft were operating in Republic hybrid liveires, so I will try and paint them on the CPAI model and if I find a source that has the actual late 80s MKE Convair schedule, I'll update the plans with the real flights.

I will only be sharing repaints here linking to my Drive as credit for these goes to people like mikeblaze and sierraair as all I did was modify and combine their paints to give us a representation of these liveries until a proper repaint is eventually hopefully made. Here are some Continental ones, and note that I have attempted to give us a psuedo 737-100 (as People Express\Continental operated 17 at the time!). I moved the exit location, blocked out some windows, moved the aft door forward, and made other changes like changing the size of the titles to make the 737-200 look as much like a 737-100 as possible. Also used Brians' PeoplExpress livery as a base with his mock-100 engine textures being used. I am still working on the titles for the PeoplExpress 737-200 hybrid, but I included a screenshot so that you could compare it to the normal FAIB 737-200:














These will eventually be uploaded with aleck's 1988 and 1991 Pan Am plans I've added them to, but I have completed the missing Pan Am LAX commuter operation of the late 80s/early 90s using the real schedule. The DHC-7 was operated by Pan Am Express, the wholly owned regional division of Pan Am which used the callsign "Pan Am" (Mainline Pan Am used "Clipper") and PXX codes. The DHC-6 was operated by Resort Air Express and used it's own callsign, which I think was "Resort Air". The paints are on www.simlivery.com

The DHC-7 operation was from maybe 86 or 87 thru 1990 or 1991, the DHC-6 operation failed in 1988.
