I got XP right when it was released and it was terrible. It crashed as much, or more, as the Windows 2000 I was using. That's where it got its name; Xtra Problems. Now, it's the most stable OS I've ever used and I'm very pleased with it. Hi Jason. Me to. Bought XP as soon as it came out and had no end of problems with it!! Service pack 1 fixed them and since then it has been the best Windoze made. I did a windoze update and that seemed to break XP yesterday. Dam thing would show the boot screen, do its blank out mode and never come back! Running recovery only told me that the drive had problems which it could not fix. There are no problems with the drive, just a screwed up driver or two. Well I re-installed XP as it is quicker than hunting down the duff driver (done that a few times before!). Set up a minimal system and well set up a duel boot with Vista again. Since my install in March, (I bought it early again!!) things have improved. Drivers and updates are now available which actually make Vista worth wile, so I'm setting it up as we speak. The reason Vista had so many problems was due to the developers only having a working pre-release beta for 4 months before it went gold. It was then released a month later with lots of drivers missing or unfinished. The main problem with the mega slow desktop has been solved with a patch, so I'm giving it another go. Just taking me a time to find where they have hidden everything!! OK, another reboot is required. Should be back to normal(ish) in a couple of days. Paul

Same here. Had a brief power outage during a freak storm today and usually, I can just drain the flea power and it boots. no such luck. Just got done doing a repair install.

Hi All.
System coming on slowly, but getting there.
Installed FS9 last night.
It seems to work OK, even with an error message during start up.
My system does seem faster and FS9 looks stunning (once you find out how to set the graphic setting up in Vista). I'll post some piccies soon.
The MRAI compiler does not work under Vista. I'll be looking into that tonight.
Well I hate to say it but I'm a Vista convert.
Once service pack 1 is out which will hopefully fix the problems with the explorer shell, then it will hopefully be dead stable.
As it is its more stable than XP was without SP1. Only had one BSOD so far.
OK, better eat my lunch!!

For me, the jury is still out on Vista. I have Home Premium installed on one of my laptops, and I initially hated Vista, but it's growing on me. I'm always a bit trepidatious about any new M$ release - early releases tend to be so full of bugs that you need to call the Orkin Man. My biggest problems with Vista are all the "hand-holding" - it asking you several times if you're sure you want to do what you asked it and there's a lot unnecessary memory hogging because of all the flash graphics. The latter, to me, is mere eye candy and serves no real purpose.

Now, with more drivers, video drivers and patches its allmost there!! You can turn off all the fancy stuff quite easily. Also the nagging (wife??) asking you silly questions all the time. ;D My only other gripe so far if that on my system it won't cold boot. Looks like explorer again. Loads the desktop etc, but loads no progs and won't respond to mouse clicks (just like it used to in the early XP days). Use F8, last know good boot and its fine! I have also now got the MRAI complier to work under Vista!! For those who want to know how it done this is how. Vista has lots of VB6 files, but no VB5, so pop along to Microsoft and grab the VB5 run time installer. While you are there, grab COMCTL32.OCX. Install the VB5 runtime, drop the OCX into your system32 folder. MRAI will fail to load with the same message as in Stefan's post. After many hours, I found this was due to the MRAI exe file not being given administrator access to those files. It did not matter that I am logged in as an administrator. OK, the fix. Right click on the compiler exe file, click on Properties. Select Compatibility. Near the bottom is a new menu item, Privilege Level. Click the box to Run this program as an administrator. Click OK, run MRAI, and their she blows!! Kris. I am now also a Firefox convert!! Later Paul

Paul,
That is exactly what I have had to do with various programs and updates. I have no idea why Vista needs you to do that even when you're logged in as administrator. I have shut of the "mommy" functions and simplified the graphics - I just didn't like how it defaulted to that. So far, once I updated everything and shut off the annoyances, Vista has been running smooth - granted, I do not have FS installed on my laptop (one of those things I have been planning on doing, but have yet to get to it), so I can't comment on how it does. I do have the game "Mafia" installed and it runs fine, as does "Medal of Honor - Pacific Assault".
Glad to hear you jumped on the Firefox bandwagon - it runs so much better and safer than IE.

Hi Kris and all. Just bought the new version of Daemon Tools so it will run with Vista and the dam thing won't install.!! Just in a reboot loop as it never sees the SPDT drivers installed. Tried everything on their forum , but still no joy. Anyone here managed to get it to work?? Otherwise its £50.00 down the drain!! Paul

Got it working at last!!
Had to use a combination of the fixes!! Now I can load my CD images again to run them at high speed.
Also, turning off that nagging pregnant dog seems so solve the administrator or not administrator problem!
Am I sure I want to do that ;D
