When I use my "speaking voice" I am constantly asked where my "accent" is from. I have at times been mistaken for having a British accent. In fact, I am from the US Midwest and have very little noticeable accent at all when using my normal conversational voice. I do find that my Chicago accent returns when I visit my old home town or when I am talking to a native Chicagoan. A Chicago accent is rather subtle, marked by very flat vowels and, of course, substitution of "d" for hard "th" and "t" for soft "th" ("dem tings" <--> "them things").
