Message for Kris. Read your message on Cal Classics but am not a member. I have a Continental System Quick Reference from October 1972 that shows a flight from Hilo to Portland. No details of Hilo to PHNL timings but depart PHNL 15:10 and arrive Seattle 22:24. Depart Seattle 23:00 and arrive Portland 22:37. Flight No. 782. Hope this helps. Regards Bob

Thanks, that helps!
By looking at the 747 flights that also operated in and out of Hilo, it seems like CO had indirect authority in Hawaii and the mainland meaning they couldn't fly local Hilo-Honolulu traffic, but a flight could go between Hilo and Honolulu, as long as the passengers originated on the mainland. That's more or less what I suspected. The 747 flights I have don't list departure or arrival times except from/to the mainland - It lands at Honolulu at X time and the Hilo at X time, but no indication of when it departs Honolulu for Hilo (and vice versa) - usually that's a red flag for a "through service" or an interchange. I'll add in what you gave me just to make it work, as this is January, 1973 - can't imagine much difference from October, 1972.

I can confirm from memory that it is the case that mainland US airlines flew the Hilo-Honolulu leg (or vice versa) as a continuation of service to/from the mainland but were NOT allowed to carry passengers between just those two points. I think this was the case with United, too. Intrastate Hawaiian traffic was reserved for Aloha and Hawaiian Airlines.

That one I have - it's the 707-320 service from Portland and Seattle that I've been trying to figure out, but I think Bob's got it. Thanks for the info!
