I've looked everywhere -- and I see lots of repaints have been done, but I'd like to create my own...

AIM is an interesting story. They were very protective of their paintkits. They do exist but they were for AIM painters only. Since AIM isn’t really around anymore, it may be up for debate on whether or not they can be turned loose.

I fail to understand why anyone would go through all the trouble to make a such an incredibly accurate 3D model — and then forbid other people to paint it to their own specs. Literally every other model has a paint kit.

They were very picky when it came to who got the paintkits and who released paints for those DC-10 models. This probably stems way back to the EvolveAI days. Anyone correct me if I’m wrong: EvAI split after some creative differences and their respective authors went on to create AIM and DJC.
It’s been a real pain not having any creative authority over those jets. I’ve mashed some paints together but I can’t release them b/c it’s against AIM rules. But if AIM isn’t a thing anymore, does it matter? What does everyone think?

I'm in the same boat, I have all of the AIM and EvolveAI DC-10s in some state of P3Dv4/5 conversion, but I can't release them, unfortunately for the same reasons. I'm really doing a number on the EvAI DC-10-40s, adding in some animated parts to make them pretty much as functional as the AIM DC-10-10/30 are. But, in the end, it is the thin line of respect we have for each other's work that counts, and in a rare moment, I am doing this work purely for my own FS world. I've done my bit publicly for the hobby over the last 23 years, and there is no end in sight. But, Jason, Charles, Dee, Henry, Chasen, Brian, Sergey, both of the Christians, and innumerable others; these individuals have also contributed tons of free material. So hopefully those who are tempted just because somebody is out of the hobby, to take liberties without asking, those people will have a moment of pause and some self-restraint. The hobby will be a better place with that discipline and honor among us. I count the small victories, like getting permission to flood the 64-bit world with Russian AI aircraft models, with the blessing of multiple designers.
My unfiltered version of this is, be glad for what you have, and with a little luck, some new material might show up in the future (no promises, lol).
Just my two cents worth.

Same here, I have things I can't release both from AIM and HJG. In both cases, one member of each is cool with it and they're great people, but they can't make a total decision on behalf of all the others. So...that's that. For now. I've probably painted close to 30 HJG L-1011s needed for the 1990s...longing for the day I can share them and users can retire the DWAI L-1011.
Like it or not, out of respect for them you won't find anyone here willing to cross that line publicly is my bet, even though many of us have been vocal for years that we don't agree with community freeware being so closely guarded. Say what you will about AIM, but you can't say they didn't do a LOT for the retro AI world. Same with HJG. Respect where it is due, both are giants in the AI world.
As for now, as far as personal sim set ups go, you will find that contributing to the community and having a positive attitude may very well help you end up with goodies that can't be shared with the public as of yet. All the more reason to paint, flightplan, do something to become part of the community.
Of course, the vast, vast, vast majority of people in the AI world, especially in retro, are laid back and more than happy to help. I actually have yet to have someone tell me "no" when I ask to modify their paints to help fill in other flightplans, even on AIG. And as Mikey said, there are alternatives slowly in the works...
