Somehow I always preferred this Saul Bass variation over the later one with the larger fonts - anyone knows why it was modified apart from better readability? Also does anyone know how many 727 United had with the extra emergency exit and if they were still used in 1983?
Kind regards.

They remained in the fleet, with door deactivated, until retirement around 92. I suspect they changed the livery because some exec at some point said, make the logo bigger. Because executives know better than advertising agencies.

By the way, when did they start using large letters?

By the way, when did they start using large letters? 1989 with the 747-400 coming out is when the updated Saul Bass with the lower/wider cheatlines and larger titles/tail emblem came out. I am fairly certain that the original Saul Bass livery pictured above was gone by the end of 1993. UA is rather notorious for the slow repainting of aircraft, there were still a sizable amount of planes in the 1993 grey livery at the time of the CO merger in 2010! The fast disappearance had more to do with many 727s, 737-200s, DC-10s, DC-8s, and Classic 747s being quickly replaced in the 1989-1993 timeframe by new 737-300/500s, 757/767s, and 747-400s. Almost all of those aircraft, with the exception of some 737-300s and 767-200s, were delivered in the updated 1989 livery until 1993 when the grey colors came out.

1989? I swear it was earlier than that, I remember seeing big titles on 1987 dated planes. Must be mistaken.

1989 sounds about right. The 737-300s were initially delivered with the original smaller titles though about 88, and the 747-400s never wore anything except the large titles with deliveries starting in June 89.

Thanks a lot for the information you guys provided. It's really interesting.
If I remember correctly, the delivery of the first Boeing 747-400s was delayed for a few months so that for example Lufthansa got theirs only towards September or October, instead of June/July 1989.
But the most important factor for the rather quick replacement of the early 737s and 747s, the 727s, DC-10 and a few others globally and especially in the US was 911.
Kind regards.

FYI. After surfing the Internet I found that Saul Bass's large titles were introduced in 1988.

I remember reading somewhere that it was introduced for the United title to become visible better, as it was considered too small. I think that was in A. C. Steffens book on the DC-10. Not sure, though.
Kind regards.
