unless I log off and run FS9 as a different user.
I recently started trying to do re-paints again for FS9 and add some retro scenery to the sim after a lengthy period of inactivity, during which I switched computers and operating systems and went from Windows Vista to 7. I didn't have any problem running FS9, but a variety of weird issues have crept up which I had to google and find workarounds for:
1. all of the files in the FS9 directory appear to be "locked" or read only, which means a LOT of tedious file saving and moving to other directories before I can overwrite the ones in FS9 "with adminsitrator approval". This alone is frustrating, but I've managed to get used to it.
2. Adding new scenery wasn't working until I found a fix which seems to work.
3. the one that's really bothering me is this--now for some reason I cannot get repaints to show up. The directories in FS9 don't seem to "see" what my paint program, Paint Shop Pro, is saving to the aircraft texture directories. When I save the 24 bit BMPs to ....texture.XXX for example, and then try to open up that BMP with DXTBmp, no BMP appears available for opening.
I can get around this problem temporarily by changing the user account control settings, restarting the computer in safe mode (trying to use it in normal mode is immpossible as it crashes repeatedly) and then using DXTBmp which now can "see" or find the BMPs I have saved with PSP, to save them as extended bitmaps. Then I change the user account control settings back, restart the computer, and try to start FS9.
Here's the funny part. None of the changes show up UNLESS I log off, log back in as another user, and start FS9 as a generic "user" as opposed to the administrator. Which would be OK, other than the fact that half of the scenery I have added through the years shows up in one "version" (i.e., under the administrator account) and half under the generic user account. Here's a concrete example to explain. I added the retro KATT scenery by Dan French and managed to get it working in my "normal" administrator" version of FS9, but when I want to see any new repaints, and have to do the log off procedure and run FS9 as a generic user, as described above, KATT appears as the default unmodified version.
I cannot figure out what in &^$^$^ is going on. I only have one FS9 installation on my computer--one directory. Why do I essentially have two distinct versions of the same program running on the two different log-ins?
I hate this Windows 7...
If anyone can give me a simple explanation for this problem, I would be eternally grateful. All I really want to do is have one installation that has all of my scenery in it. I hate having to go two places to see different stuff.
Thanks for any help.
