Hello,
For a long time I've noticed that lines look wavey when an aircraft is at a slight angle to the ground. For example, Delta has the broad blue stripe along the side and a thin red stripe above. If the aircraft is not parallel with the ground, the red stripe starts to look wavey. Is there a setting I should change to fix this? On the textures they are perfectly even, of course.
I was hoping to insert a .jpg to demonstrate this problem, but I can't figure out how to do that.
Thank you, Kurt

From experience with Wien, make sure that a line goes across a polygon and does not run along a poly/poly border.
To insert a jpg, first post it to an on-line image hosting server (like imageshack.us) and put the url btwn (bracket)img(bracket) (bracket)/img(bracket).

Hi,
I've never used imageshack or anything like that, so I guess we'll forgo the photo.
These stripes are just the regular cheat lines. I used the AI DC-8-61 (Dee's) as an example, but I see it routinely on many AI aircraft. It's most pronounced when you have two stripes near each other, such as 1970's Delta.
Thanks, Kurt

I do not have that problem. I have my graphics card hardware anti-aliasing on 8x and the option turned off in FS. Your UA DC-8-61 for example is as straight as a die. See the picture in my submissions post. Page 3 or 4 I think. No jagges at all. Try that and see if it helps. Paul

Hi Paul,
Yours looks very nice, indeed. My anti-aliasing only goes to 6x; I wonder if that's the problem? I have an ATI Radeon X600 and haven't updated the drivers since I got this computer in 2005, so perhaps I should try that. It's always an "adventure" when I try something like that, so I tend to be reluctant.
Thanks, Kurt

ATI card only have 6xAA except for the latest generation (2400,2600,2900) of cards. But that's not actually the problem from what I understand. 6xAA would be fine. The problem seems to be that ATI cards do not antialias textures, whereas NVidia cards do. So that means that any textures without mip maps such as AI planes (a word about mip maps further down) look pretty bad on ATI cards but on the other hand you can throw any kind of weather and clouds at them without a performance problem. Clouds seem to be the big weakness of NVidia cards precisely because of the anti-aliasing which is only worse with all those semi transparent textures on top of another. Take your pick. Actually the best way of getting rid of the jaggies are mip maps. Unfortunately mip maps don't work very well with FS9. With some older graphics cards you get the effect that not always the correct mip map is used, resulting in blurries. New cards seem to handle that better but on my system I get terrible stutters when the AI planes have mip maps, both with ATI and NVidia cards.

I'm a Nvida man myself so did not know that ATI cards do not anti alias textures. Something to watch out for I guess!! All the Nvida cards that I have hate Mip Maps. If you want blurred textures mip maps is the way to go It can be a right pain removing the mip maps one by one So Kurt it sounds like you will have to have wavy lines. Paul

there's a command-line and batch mode for imagetool to remove mips:
imagetool -batch -nogui -brief -r -dxt3 -nomip "D:\FS2K4\Aircraft\AIA B727-200 Paint kit\texture.Braniff Ultra Ultra Terra Cotta\*.bmp"
be sure to add quotes if there are spaces in your file names.

Thanks for the Tip Christian. I'll get image tool and try it out. I am using DXTtoBMP at the moment. Paul

Hello,
Thank you for your advice. The good news is I already run without mips since that problem was even worse than this one. Sad my computer came with the wrong card, though. It seems like I'm always "behind" on getting the right graphics. Since I'm not on the market for a new card, I guess I'll press on like it is, but at least now I know why.
Best regards, Kurt

People say that DXTBmp is better than imagetool at preserving the quality of textures when converting them to dxt3 but it doesn't support batch mode. Again, take your pick. Personally I went for imagetool... Oh and please take my advice about graphics cards further up with a grain of salt, I don't feel 100% comfortable with my current level of knowledge in this area and might be wrong about some things.

Hey Paul / Jetstar,
What kind of graphics card have you got in your machine?
Thanks, Kurt

Hey Paul / Jetstar, What kind of graphics card have you got in your machine? Thanks, Kurt Hi Kurt. I'm running twin XFX 670Mhz Nvida 8800GT's in SLI. Having two does nothing for FS9, but sure gives games a kick ;D Paul

I'm hoping to get one that will take care of the anti-aliasing, I'm kind of disenchanted with the way the AI aircraft look. Is the 8800GT the card you had when you took those screenshots July last year?
Thanks! Kurt

Hi Kurt.
Last year I had a Geforce 7950 GX2, which was a twin card.
Look at the repaint section under AA 1980s fleet. Those pictures are taken with the 8800GT.
FS9 makes no use of powerful graphics cards. Its CPU grunt that it needs.
FSX runs well on my QX6800 quad core, but I just don't like it! The only nice touch for AI is the different sounds you can add for each aircraft, and there are lots more XML codes that can be used for AI which would make life easy in FS9, but alas only for FSX.
Have a look at the admin forum and you can see what I have been able to do with XML.
There are newer cards than the 8800GT, buts its the best bang for your buck with the 8 srs and its also better than a lot of the 9 srs as well. The ones I have have been factory overclocked to 670Mhz, but as I said, FS9 does not use the graphics card anywhere near its potential.
I can remember a few years ago replacing a TNT1 with a TNT2 Ultra in FS200, and there was no change at all to the FPS in FS. That is true today as well. It should make a difference in FSX, but its full of dancing bunnies etc so whatever gain you would have had is taken up by pointless graphical addons.
Paul
