I'm truly sorry to hear this, Mr. Jason... I know we all do not want to see AIM go nor you go as a massive and very talented contributor. Please know we all are here for you and that you are always welcome. Keep in touch, my dear friend...

Jason, I'm so sorry you had gone through this, I couldn't imagine the frustration of losing years of work on this (a decade or more maybe?). I once went into a similar situation when I was doing the Retro Mexico 90's package and suddenly had a blue screen and was not able to recover anything because apparently it was damaged physically.
However, on other cases, I was able to retrieve everything by accessing the hard drive via Ubuntu. Have you tried that?? you can download the software, burn it in a CD and run it automatically when you insert it on the CD driver. if that doesn't work there are cable adapters to connect hard drives via USB to another computer, that way you could extract the important info. if the computer does not recognize the HD via the cable try it also with Ubuntu. Getting into the hard drives via Ubuntu has saved my life many times.
Right now, I'm on a situation with my FS computer. Right after I painted the City Bird AI MD-11s and the LTU Overland MD-11 I noticed a lot of ads and crap when uploading those screenshots to photobucket. I went to program files and saw some suspicious folders (malaware and stuff like that). I deleted some of them but it seems like accidentally I deleted some that I shouldn't have messed with. Many icons disappeared including the photoshop. Hence, I no longer have access to paint at the moment. I tried to restore the system to a date in which it was working well but that icon was gone as well. In my case, I guess this was about to come eventually since I was still using Windows XP which has no support any longer having my system very vulnerable. I guess it was about time to move to windows 7 but it will be a drag having to reinstall everything.
I hope you get to retrieve all your stuff, it would be a great pity seeing you go and, if not, I thank you for all your repaints and your years of dedication and hard work on this sharing all your talent in the FS community.
Eduardo

Have you tried malwarebytes?I use it a lot and removed some that no other anti virus could. You can get it as a trail use at no cost.

I had a laptop size (2.5") 1 TB HD go bad not all that long ago. I was able to use a HD reader base to get everything off of it that I needed. Kind of looked like this: www.techpowerup.com/img/11-10-18/76a.jpgI forget how it reads HD's but it, in one fashion or another, allows you to access it like you would a USB memory stick. If the HD doesn't even spin up, it wouldn't hurt to defer it to someone who could tinker around with it and get it at least accessible. That amount and kind of work is worth fighting for...

Well, how much RELEVANT (i.e. non-FS) stuff is on that HDD? If it was quite a bit, a professional data recovery might be worth the cost.

Jason,
Try the ubuntu way before you spend a fortune. Ubuntu wont detect any virus from that HD since it's a different operating system so you will be able to navigate through the HD and extract your stuff to another, say, portable HD or so.

All our FS worlds would be much different without your contribution (and not different in a better way either) Thanks so much for your talents.

Other than FS related stuff, there wasn't much on my HD. It would hardly be worth the cost of professional recovery. Yeah, I wouldn't want to spend that much money for FS stuff either. Oh well, whatever you're going to do now, have fun doing it. *Salute*

That is bizarre... Is there any semi-professional way to do a back up of files that will not cost an arm and a leg? I could ask around if you'd like, Mr. Jason... I have someone in mind that helped me out when something similar happened.

Ubuntu should read file systems used by Windows, i.e. FAT and NTFS.
Your old HDD wasn't encrypted, Jason, was it?

Wouldn't other devices be affected too? Phones and what-not?

Just as a matter of interest have any of your memorised phone numbers been wiped?I don't know if mobiles are shielded or not but if any are missing then the fault is obvious.

Are there any large or powerful magnets in the cab of a loco? (Can that computer guy find any of your files? Or maybe it's not a HD issue? Motherboard maybe?)
