Tired of various quality issues in the availability and accuracy of existing repaints of AI MD-11 aircraft in American Airlines' 1968 livery - ranging from not so great quality due to the texture consisting of resized photos because the repainter was trying to achieve a photorealistic look, to logo size/color/font/kerning issues, to details/accuracy like window count, etc, I decided to do my own. Unfortunately, this was before I learned about the issues with UTT and what they were doing with the models others created. Either way, I decided to finish it, since I had put a lot of work into it, instead of hunting down yet another model, finding repaints, becoming frustrated about their quality or lack thereof, and doing my own repaint again. [Copy image URL to see the full sized images] First time around, threw something togehter. I thought it looked OK at first - in hindsight, it looks like absolute crap: Especially compared to how the livery looked after I redid it, started over: Better nose shot: Still gotta do the stripes underneath the winglet, and maybe 1-2 other things, but what a contrast compared to v1. Looks much more like the real thing, but I still feel it is far from perfect. Maybe I'm just being an over-analytical perfectionist though, what do you think?

Not bad at all for a beginners attempt. Better than some of my efforts. Hope you keep up the painting, we can always do with more painters.

Thanks, man - I hope to do a lot more in the future.
I actually wanna start by going and doing repaints for all the AI aircraft I am using for the 90s retro American Airlines flightplans - since the idiosyncracies that made me put this repaint together exists on all the ones I downloaded + the AARDVARK American Airlines repaints on their site at least kinda could look more realistic, but that's my "I wanna make this look as good as possible" thing bugging the hell outta me. (problem is if I don't finish this one first, then I'll go onto the next one, and not finish the one I started - a vicious cycle, really.) >_<

Not bad at all, actually... Very well done. ImpulseAI did a livery of this jet but the way you have done v2, yours looks closer to the rest of the AAL's that have come out of RetroAI. Post it up somewhere when you get done!

Post it up somewhere when you get done! You bet Ugh trying to figure out, if I go and do more AA repaints [regardless of if for myself or for release] how I'm gonna do the double-lined font/text for the 757/767/the 80 on Super 80, DC-10 stickers adjacent to the Helvetica LuxuryJet and LuxuryLiner titles on the fuselage. MD-11 was easy, I suspect DC-10 would be easy too, but at the small scale I need to do so it doesn't look out of places, I'm gonna have a hard time - without help - replicating the lines and curves of a 5, 6, 7, etc, AND preserving the outline look of the type/font used.

The AMERICAN fuse titles seem to be stretched a bit too tall.

That'll be one of the revisions I need to tackle. Already got the bit under the winglets painted, and the doors highlighted in the white/gray... ... gonna tackle that one next, and fix the windows - accidentally made the section between the 1L/R and 2L/R doors 9 windows instead of 10 windows, which it should be. EDIT: Fixed the windows - now 10 windows between the 1L/R and 2L/R doors like it should be, and altered the fuselage logo a bit: EDIT Oops, one door not highlighted correctly... gotta fix that >_< EDIT: Fixed it, and also took the metal from the baremetal to add some aluminum look to the leading edge of the vertical stabilizer: EDIT: Welp, there are two window configs - which go along with these two seat charts www.departedflights.com/AAM111094a.jpgwww.planespotters.net/Aviation_Photos/photo.show?id=224254 - with 10 windows between the 1 L/R and 2 L/R doors, 6th window from the 2 L/R doors completely blanked out, which I represented here... which is this configuration with the galley AND storage before the 2L/R door: And this one config www.abpic.co.uk/photo/1004504/ - with 13 windows between the 1 L/R and 2 L/R doors on the starboard side, 10 windows between the 1 L/R and the 2 L/R doors on the port side, 6th window from the 2 L/R doors NOT completely blanked out - which goes with the configuration without the galley before the 2 L/R door, just the storage. Given that, a simple window config change and I'll have the other one represented as well.

Just need to add the American flag to the tails of both my repaints - the one representing the transatlantic configuration's window layout, the other representing the transpacific configuration's window layout, then I think I can safely say I'm done.

Looking good! Just keep in mind the eagle on the tail is always flying forward. You may have to flip the one on the left side.

On your MD-11 repaint, the eagle on the left side of the tail is facing aft. It should be facing forward - towards the nose. The right side is correct.

They both are winners! I like the attention to detail... even down to the windows.
